50th Wedding Anniversary

DSCN0954Elder James Hall and Sister Peggy Hall were honored for their 5oth wedding anniversary on June 28, 2014 with a reception at Bethany Church by their children and grandchildren. Many loved ones, friends and neighbors were present to express their love and congratulations. The minister that married them 50 years ago, Joe Epting, was blessed to be present and he recalled how hot it was on that day in July when he performed the ceremony. Brother Hall remarked that he must have used Super Glue because of the continued duration of this bond of love. In this present generation, we don’t see an abundance of couples celebrating 50 years of marriage

DSCN0955as they part ways without any scriptural reason. Brother James and Sister Peggy have been faithful members of Bethany even though they don’t get to attend regular services because Brother James is busy ministering to the flock he oversees at Yalobusha Primitive Baptist Church. We pray the Lord will continue to bless with many more years together as husband and wife “till death us do part.”

A good wife is certainly a blessing from the Lord and so is a husband. Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines but he was the one who said, “Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the LORD.” (Prov. 18:22). I am on record as saying that “the world provides women but only the Lord provides a wife.” The Lord instituted marriage at the very beginning as He brought Eve to Adam and the scripture says, “… For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.” (Matt. 19:5-6).

The 50th anniversary is supposed to be the Golden Wedding Anniversary but it is more valuable than gold or silver because true love cannot be bought. Once again it is Solomon who gives the value of true love and its endurance: “Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned.” (Song Sol. 8:7). Husbands are to love their wives as Christ loved the church and gave Himself for it. Not only is the marriage a blessing from the Lord but children born from that union are also a special blessing as the Psalmist declares, “Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth.” (Psalm 127:3-4)–July 1, 2014–Elder Larry Wise
