Daily Bread

We are sometimes prone to want things in advance, but Jesus told the disciples to pray after this manner, “Give us day by day our daily bread.” (Luke 11:3). The Lord provides the things we stand in need of on a daily basis. We don’t need tomorrow’s grace today; we need grace for today. We go to worship the Lord in church services on the first day of the week, but we serve Him daily. Jesus tells the disciples, “And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.” (Luke 9:23). We must deny ourselves daily and crucify our fleshly affections in order to please the Lord and receive a daily blessing. We are surely blessed in our worship services when the Lord manifests His presence, and we are revived to face another day and week. The Lord has already been at work the other six days, even though we may not have realized it. The Psalmist David said, “Blessed be the Lord, who daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation. Selah.” (Psalm 68:19). The Lord daily loads us with benefits, and when we see them we are revived. Jacob did not believe that his son Joseph was alive after all the years that he had believed he was dead when his other sons, returning from Egypt, told him Joseph was alive. His heart was faint because he believed them not. When he saw the wagons that Joseph had sent to carry him, he was revived and said, “It is enough; Joseph my son is yet alive: I will go and see him before I die.” (Gen. 45:28). Rejoice and see that the Lord gives us day by day our daily bread, and that is much more than we deserve. Thank the Lord for His mercy and grace.–March 20, 2012–Elder Larry Wise
