Til The Storm Passes By

Our hearts are saddened by the recent devastation caused by the outbreak of tornadoes across the Midwest and South. Natural storms destroy lives and cause great damage and the storms we encounter in our lives can do the same. We sing a song sometimes that states, “Keep me safe til the storm passes by, til the thinder sounds no more…” Yes, we are so thankful when the Lord keeps us safe, but there is a refuge from and in the midst of the storm. The disciples were crossing a lake with Jesus one time and there arose a storm and the ship was filled with waves so that it seemed about to sink. Jesus was asleep, but they awoke Him, asking, “Master, carest thou not that we perish?” He responded thusly, “And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.” (Mark 4:39). A great calm came about because there was a Great Savior. Jesus rebuked them for their lack of faith. There will be many storms along the way and some we cause ourselves, but we can take refuge in the Rock of ages. “And a man shall be as an hiding place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.” (Isa. 32:2).  That man that Isaiah writes about is Jesus Christ. Only He can calm the troubled waters. When the Israelites got in trouble they cried unto the Lord and the Psalmist said, “He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still. Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven.” (Psalm 107: 29-30). It is good to have a good tornado shelter available in the event of a severe storm. We have a greater shelter available spiritually in Jesus Christ. Yes, keep us safe “til the storm passes by.”  Behind all clouds, we have the assurance that the sun is still shining. “For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.” (Psalm 30:5)–March 5, 2012–Elder Larry Wise
