Happy Mother’s Day

This is a repeat of the article I wrote for Mother’s Day last May 2014 with the exception of one paragraph I added at the end which dramatically illustrates the depth of a true Mother’s love for her children.

A happy and blessed Mother’s Day is extended to all the mothers of our congregation and to the public at large. Everyone who is reading this has a mother who is now living or who has lived and served and gone on to be with the Lord. Indeed, you would not be reading this if you had not a mother. All children are the fruit of the womb of the mother thus it is so heart rending to know that millions of babies have been aborted in the womb of the mother and have been abandoned on door steps and in garbage bins thereby fulfilling the scripture in Isaiah 49:15: “Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.” Thanks be to God He doesn’t forget His children whom He has brought forth in the new birth. So we know that a natural father and mother can forsake their offspring but we rejoice in Psalm 27:10: “When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up.”

A real mother exhibits the true meaning of love to her husband and children an is truely described in scripture as a virtuous woman. “Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.” This virtuous woman is also a mother because Solomon goes on to describe her as one in which her children rise up and call her blessed and the heart of her husband does safely trust in her. The scripture describes charity (love in action) as a grace that suffers long and endureth all things. A mother might have to endure the heaviness of a wayward child but that love suffers long and is never abated just as the Lord’s love for His children is longsuffering and never entirely abated.

We are commanded to honour our father and mother that our life might be long on the earth. Honour them while they are living and Mother’s Day is a day to formerly honour them by words and deed. Every day, however, should be a day in which we honour the one who brought us into the world. Our mothers may have long since departed this life, but we can honour them by not departing from the ways of the Lord that we were taught and being obedient to the Lord. We desire not to do anything that would be dishonouring to the name of our blessed Saviour or the name of our mother and father. Solomon said, “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.” (Prov. m22:1). We sing the song “Precious Memories” on occasions and recall the memories of father and mother that have been absorbed over the years. Our Heavenly Father doesn’t always give us what we deserve and neither did or does our mother. Chastening is administered but not to the severity it could be because it is tempered with mercy.

Mothers spent more time in the home in former years than they do today and that is indeed the scriptural way. Perhaps that is one of the qualifying factors in the youth of today who seemingly do not have respect for authority as in former years. The Bible says, “I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.” (I Tim. 5:14). All this then to be accompanied by a certain demeanor that is precious in the wight of God. “…even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.” (I Peter 3:4). More time with children means less time spent with elements of the world and the bad influence that it brings. The Bible says, “Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.” (I Cor. 15:33).

A mother is always concerned for her children regardless of what their age might be. It doesn’t cease when the children leave home to go to college or get married. It continues as long as she lives and has the mind to consider and know. The Lord is always concerned about His children no matter what their age and His hand of mercy is extended, sometimes to a disobedient and gainsaying people. Who knows how many times we have been saved (delivered) from some earthly peril because our mother was praying for us and we weren’t even aware of it.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers and may your day be blessed beyond measure with the love of God and family manifested in a powerful and wonderful way. May we remember the living and the dead who put their lives in jeopardy just to bring us into this world. “Mother, we love you beyond measure and not just this day but every day of our lives.”–May 10, 2014–Elder Larry Wise

P/S.: Years ago, a young mother was making her way across the hills of South Wales, carrying her tiny baby in her arms, when she was overtaken by a blinding blizzard. She never reached her destination and when the blizzard had subsided her body was found by searchers beneath a mound of snow. But they discovered that before her death, she had taken off all her outer clothing and wrapped it about her baby. When they unwrapped the child, to their great surprise and joy, they found he was alive and well. She had mounded her body over his and given her life for her child, proving the depths of her mother love. Years later that child, David Lloyd George, grown to manhood, became prime minister of Great Britain, and, without doubt, one of England’s greatest statesman.–Elder Larry Wise May 6, 2015

“He maketh the barren woman to keep house, and to be a joyful mother of children. Praise ye the LORD.” (Psalm 113:9)
