Father’s Business

Mary and Joseph had went up to Jerusalem as they did each year to observe the feast of the passover. Jesus was with them on this journey at the age of 12 years. They had went a day’s journey before they realized Jesus was not with them and their company. They went back seeking their son and found Him after 3 days. They found Him in the temple amidst the doctors, asking them questions and answering their questions; so much so that they (the doctors) were astonished at His answers and understandidng. Mary and Joseph asked why He had so dealt with them as they had sought him sorrowing?  “And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?” (Luke 2:49). Jesus came to earth to do the Father’s business. He told His disciples that He had meat to eat that they knew nothing about. “Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.” (John 4:34). He came to finsih the work the Father gave Him to do. He came to save His people from their sins and finished that work at Calvary so that none can lay anything to the charge of God’s elect. (Rom. 8:33-34). The Lord’s people who He saved from their sins also have business (work) to do after they are born again of the Spirit. As the spiritual creation of God, they are to do good works to glorify God and not in order to obtain life. “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” (Eph. 2:10).  There is a blessing and rest found in this business and work of the saints. “Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.” (John 6:27).  ” Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.” (Heb. 4:11). May we all be more about the Father’s business rather than our own. No individual could do what Jesus did in saving His people; however, we can praise His great name for His wonderful works toward the children of men!–Feb. 18, 2012–Elder Larry Wise
