Reading The Bible

The people of God need to read the Bible for it is God’s communication tool to His people of what He has done for them, will do for them, and continue to do for them. Preachers preach the message but ultimately it is God’s message to His chosen, redeemed, and born again children of God. Many decide to read the Bible through each year but fail to follow through. I have been guilty of that. This is a noble endeavor and the rewards are immense. Everyone needs to know that the things preached by the preacher are true; the only way this can be known is by reading the scriptures. Paul has this commendation for the Berean brothers and sisters: “These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.” (Acts 17:11). These Bereans read the scriptures to verify the truth that had been preached. Many children of God avoid reading the book of Revelation because of much of its symbolic language that is difficult to understand. However, the apostle John pronounces a blessing on those that read this book and obey. If reading this book is a blessing, surely reading all the other books of the Bible will also be a blessing. “Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.” (Rev. 1:3). The preacher can read from the Bible as he preaches and also quote from the Bible. However, the Lord isn’t going to bless him to quote any scripture that he has never read or possibly heard. Then it is incumbent upon him to study the word of God is show himself approved unto God. This study cannot be accomplished without reading. So I would urge us all to read the Bible more; not only would each child of God be benefited, but everyone involved would be benefited. The Psalmist tells us about the admonishment in God’s word and the reward of obedience. “Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.” (Psalm 19:11). Read His word and be blessed!–Jan. 12, 2012–Elder Larry Wise
