Value of A Song

Singing is a vital part of the worship service. It oftentimes sets the tone for the preaching of God’s word. We are told by the Psalmist, “Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands. Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing.” (Psalm 100:1-2). Even if you do not sing aloud in the song service, you can still sing in your heart because the Lord knows what goes on in the deep recess of the heart. Hannah was barren as the Lord had shut up her womb. She prayed to the Lord to give her a man child, but no audible words came out of her mouth. She spake in her heart, and the Lord heard and answered her prayer and gave her Samuel. I sometimes just sing silently the words of a song and they give me a lift when I’m feeling down. Remembering the scriptures also do the same thing. The Psalmist again said, “I call to remembrance my song in the night: I commune with mine own heart: and my spirit made diligent search.” (Psalm 77:6). This Psalmist had been made to wonder if the mercy of the Lord had clean gone forever and had the Lord forgotten to be gracious. He would remember the works of the Lord and His wonders of old. Jeremiah had a similar experience in 3rd chapter of Lamentation as he thought his hope had perished. However, he was able to recall something to his mind and his hope was rekindled. We do not sing to one another; we sing unto the Lord. There is a reason for this. The Psalmist David said, “I will sing unto the LORD, because he hath dealt bountifully with me.” (Psalm 13:6). It is much easier to sing the Lord’s song when we are in place in serving the Lord. However, it is much more difficult to sing the Lord’s song if we are being held in captivity by worldly things. The children of Israel were in captivity and their captors required of them mirth saying, “sing us one of the songs of Zion.” How did they respond? “How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land?” (Psalm 137:4). There is great value in a song.–November 15, 2011–Elder Larry Wise
